C'è un piccolo fondo di verità in queste critiche.
Di fatto, la serie Mario 3D non ha rimpiazzato i Mario 2D, è diventata una serie a se stante e parallela.
Quindi semplicemente non era il loro genere, si vede che erano troppo abituati o affezionati alla formula 2D e avrebbero dovuto aspettare fino al Nintendo DS, quindi neanche poco tempo, per riavere il platform bidimensionale. -

Il 3D nel gioco era un concetto nuovo in quel periodo, è normale che non fossero abituati inizialmente a quei spazi aperti.
Mario 64 dava molta priorità al movimento che ad altro, con un vasto moveset che ti fa raggiungere lo stesso posto in modi diversi. Alcuni di loro infatti trovavano lo spazio molto vuoto e i nemici poco interattivi, due dei quali sono "risolte" in Crash Bandicoot che è molto più vicino alle loro abitudini..
